Angostura is one of the most famous and long-standing brands in the world of bitters and rum. Founded in 1824 by Dr. Johann Siegert in the town of Angostura, Venezuela (now Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela), the company initially produced its bitters as a medicinal tonic. Dr. Siegert was a Surgeon General in Simón Bolívar's army and created the bitters to treat soldiers' stomach ailments.
Angostura Cocoa Bitters are incredibly versatile in cocktail crafting. They can substitute traditional aromatic bitters in any cocktail to add a chocolatey twist. For example, they work wonderfully in a Vieux Carré or an Espresso Grog, offering a unique layer of flavor that complements the other ingredients beautifully.
Nose:
Angostura Cocoa Bitters offers a complex aroma profile that includes spicy notes reminiscent of mint and clove, layered with the deep, nutty essence of cocoa.
Palate:
On the palate, these bitters present a balanced blend of cocoa's rich bitterness with slight pruny and winey notes. The taste evolves to reveal a significant raisin character and hints of vanilla, providing a nuanced and sophisticated flavor experience.
Finish:
The finish of Angostura Cocoa Bitters features lingering cocoa powder notes, transitioning to wine-heavy elements that bring depth and a refined complexity to the end.
