Since 2004 Craft Distillers has worked with Grupo Los Danzantes to develop the US market for artisanal mezcals. Both Craft Distillers and Grupo Los Danzantes are deeply committed to keeping age-old artisanal methods alive by bringing the Alipús mezcals to market, thus providing a livelihood for a way of working, and a way of life, that are danger of disappearing – forever – amid the changes created by the powerful, forced, and rapid transition to the modern world.
Produced in the Sola de Vega region of Oaxaca, this mezcal showcases the artisanal skills of its producers, Felix Garcia, Jesus Rios, and Leonardo Rojas. It is noted for its smooth yet profound profile, typical of mezcals distilled in clay pots, which are known to impart a unique soft mouthfeel and complex flavor nuances.
Nose:
This mezcal presents an intense aromatic profile with dominant citrus notes, particularly orange rind and lime leaf, complemented by an intriguing hint of ocean air, which might be enhanced by the presentation during tasting.
Palate:
On the palate, Alipus (Barro) San Miguel is characterized by its vegetal and earthy notes, seamlessly blended with the smokiness typical of mezcals. The palate is further enriched with flavors of cocoa nibs, tobacco, and cracked pepper, adding depth and intensity. The presence of citrus continues, lending a refreshing complexity to the overall flavor experience
Finish:
The finish is robust with lingering notes of clay and a blend of spice and fruit, which subtly rounds out the sipping experience, leaving a lasting impression of the mezcal's rich flavors.
