Ableforth’s is best known for the multi-award-winning Bathtub Gin and Rumbullion! spiced rum. Since launching in 2011, the range has grown significantly, using time-honoured techniques such as cold compounding as well as cold distillation for their 91.2% abv absinthe, Summer Fruit Cup and Christmas Mulled Cup! Bathtub Gin is now available in Cask-Aged, Navy-Strength, Sloe and Old Tom variants, whilst the regular edition is also available in Magnum (1.5 litre) and Methuselah (6 litre) sizes. Bathtub has received Gold Outstanding and Master awards from the International Spirit & Competition and The Gin Masters respectively as well as Best Compound Gin at the World Gin Awards 3 years running (2014, 2015 & 2016) and 2 International Spirits Challenge Trophies! Likewise, Rumbullion! is now available in Navy-Strength as well as XO 15 Years Old variants whilst the regular edition is also available in a Magnum (1.5 litre) bottle. Crafted from an exceptional blend of fragrant botanicals, Ableforth’s award-winning Bathtub Gin takes a while to blossom into a well-rounded final flavour profile. The baseline is distilled in a copper pot, using juniper, coriander and other botanicals. A portion of this base spirit gin is infused with six other botanicals: orange peel, cassia, juniper, coriander, cardamom and clove. The infusion process takes another week to allow the flavour to mature and those fresh botanicals to shine through - something which is not possible with traditional distillation. The nose leads with a juniper-rich bouquet with hints of cardamom, orange blossom, and cinnamon. On the palate, there's notes of juniper, cloves, coriander and cardamom with the last two lingering on the finish. This Bathtub Gin’s crisp and refreshing taste makes it great for mixing with a premium tonic and a wedge of orange.
Nose:
An initially juniper-rich bouquet is backed up with a solid backbone of rich grain spirit. Top notes of cardamom and orange blossom are evident with just a suggestion of cinnamon.
Palate:
The initial focus is juniper, but the earthier botanicals make themselves known in the initial palate too. Mouthfeel is exceptionally viscous and creamy – this is a good spirit, and it makes itself known.
Finish:
The juniper subsides and gives way to cardamom and cinnamon, with a late resurgence from orange peel.
