Grand Mere Semillon

Grapes were harvested by hand in two batches to achieve a perfect balance of ripeness. They were whole-bunch pressed and allowed to settle before being racked to barrels for natural fermentation. After fermentation, the wine underwent barrel maturation in mostly older French oak barrels to add depth and staying power without detracting from the natural fruit character. Maturation on the primary lees with regular stirring (batonnage) ensured further complexity and verve. Additionally, 20% of the wine was fermented and aged in clay amphora pots.

The grapes are sourced from a unique and very old bushvine vineyard planted in 1936. This high-density planting of around 7,000 vines per hectare is more than double the average vineyard density in South Africa. The south-east facing, unirrigated vineyard is located at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level, allowing the vines to achieve a perfect balance between growth and yields over the decades, resulting in excellent textured wine.

The wine was matured in mostly older French oak barrels, with 20% fermented and aged in clay amphora pots. The exact duration of aging is not specified, but previous vintages have undergone similar processes.
