Champagne Vazart-Coquart
Champagne Vazart-Coquart is situated in the heart of the Côte des Blancs in Champagne, farming and producing Champagne in the Grand Cru village of Chouilly. The wines were introduced to South Africa via Pieter Ferreira (Graham Beck and Pieter Ferreira), an encyclopaedia of the Champagne region and admirer of the precision and craft at Vazart-Coquart. At the helm since 1991 is Jean-Pierre Vazart as the third generation. An imposing, characterful and innovative vigneron, who has transitioned the domaine parcels over to organic certified viticulture. Vazart are among the top independent and Grower Champagne producers in the region, farming 30 plots across 11ha and specialising in Chardonnay (Blanc de Blancs). Farming for quality over yield, these are far removed from the generic, mass produced offerings of Champagne.
Description
The nose is initially discreet, almost closed, but with a few minutes of opening, it reveals more gourmet notes that evoke dried fruits, vanilla and white flowers. On the palate, it is a very fine champagne, offering an aromatic palette ranging from yellow fruits to vanilla, also evoking mineral notes. The finish is superb, long, fleshy and elegant.
Food Pairing
This cuvée 82/15 from Maison Vazart-Coquart will go perfectly with a fillet of bass with vanilla and pan-fried porcini mushrooms, hot duck foie gras with cinnamon-flavoured grapes or even a Paris Brest.
