Tasting Notes:

Ruby in colour, Tamboerskloof Syrah 2015 has a complex nose of garrigue, (the combined fynbos aromas of rosemary, lemon verbena, lavender and marjoram that perfume the air at Kleinood) ripe cherry, fine spices, cassis, currant and ripe strawberry. The well-balanced palate shows dark plum, Christmas cake, Turkish delight and a fine hint of cinnamon. It finishes with soft elegant, chalky tannins. Decant 30 minutes prior to serving.

The name Tamboerskloof means the valley (kloof) of the drums (tamboer). When the Dutch settled in the Cape in 1652, lookout posts manned with spotters were established on the hills and mountains around the peninsula. The first spotter was placed where the suburb of Tamboerskloof lies today. These spotters drummed the message of an approaching ship from one lookout post to the next until the farmers in the surrounding valleys heard the drums and proceeded to harvest their crops and hasten to Cape Town harbour with their wagons in order to meet the ship on arrival. Before moving to the Boland, Gerard, Libby and their two children, Spicer and Katharien, lived in this Cape Town suburb for 25 years. Thus, with the fondest memories and the need to acknowledge the happy years they had spent there, they named their wine Tamboerskloof.

The vines were planted in 2001 on Tukulu, Kroonstad, Klapmuts, Witfontein soil 18km from the ocean. Grapes were hand picked.

The grapes are hand-picked and sorted 3 times before going into stainless steel fermenters where a combination of modern technology and old-style winemaking techniques takes care of creating our unique hand- crafted wine. Fermented at 26 ̊C for 11 to 16 days.

19 months in 500 litre and 300 litre French oak barrels 15% first fill and the remainder in older barrels.

This is a versatile wine, that pairs well with red meats, ostrich fillet, venison, Asian food and tomato-based dishes.
