Tasting Notes:

The Tamboerskloof John Spicer Syrah 2012 is structured and balanced, has a garnet colour with a magenta rim and a deep intensity. The nose develops with medium, but pronounced intensity, showing pure ripe plum, maraschino cherries, mixed spice, cedar and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is loaded with cassis, garrigue and meaty flavours and ends with a white pepper finish. The wine finishes in a medium plus body with great depth of flavour, elegant structure and firm, grainy tannins.

The name Tamboerskloof means the valley (kloof) of the drums (tamboer). When the Dutch settled in the Cape in 1652, lookout posts manned with spotters were established on the hills and mountains around the peninsula. The first spotter was placed where the suburb of Tamboerskloof lies today. These spotters drummed the message of an approaching ship from one lookout post to the next until the farmers in the surrounding valleys heard the drums and proceeded to harvest their crops and hasten to Cape Town harbour with their wagons in order to meet the ship on arrival. Before moving to the Boland, Gerard, Libby and their two children, Spicer and Katharien, lived in this Cape Town suburb for 25 years. Thus, with the fondest memories and the need to acknowledge the happy years they had spent there, they named their wine Tamboerskloof.

The grapes are hand picked from a select portion of a single vineyard block planted on Tukulu soil.

Grapes were hand sorted three times before going into stainless steel fermenters where a combination of state of the art winery technology and old-style winemaking techniques take care of designing this unique, hand crafted wine. Fermented at 26.5oC for 14 days.

15% new-, 35% second- and 50% third fill, for a period of 18 months.

Food pairing

The wine pairs well with red meat and game flavoured with herbs, berry coulis or smokey spices as well as sweeter dishes of pork, duck or spiced Asian styled dishes accompanied by plum sauces.
