Tasting Notes:

Deep crimson in colour with purple undertones. On the nose it offers ripe, fading cherry and plum fruit, salty liquorice, leather, herbs. On the palate, it is concentrated, dense and impressive with a drive to cherry, currant and spicy flavours, while still remaining fresh, with terrific length and plenty of grip for ageing.

Grattamacco was founded in 1977 in the DOC area of Bolgheri where the growing of Cabernet Sauvignon has gained great popularity. The estate is situated on top of a hill facing the sea between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, at 100 m a.s.l. The area is particularly dedicated to the production of great wines and enjoys a dry climate with consistent thermal excursions especially around the end of summer. The estate extends over an area of about 74 hectares, of which 27 are vineyards and 10 olive groves. The remaining area is forest and borders into a vast area of woodlands covering some 1,600 hectares.

The estate follows the criteria of organic farming, guaranteed and certified by ICEA.

During harvest the grapes are carefully selected manually in the vineyards and placed in truncated cone-shaped oak vats holding 700 litres, where the open fermentation takes place naturally with soft manual punching- downs; a long maceration process takes place so as to slowly release fully ripe and noble tannins only.

Malolactic fermentation develops spontaneously in French oak barriques, keeping the different varieties separate. During the aging process in barriques, which lasts between 12 and 18 months, the blends are created, before a further bottle refinement of at least 6 months. This particular wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels and then bottled in December 2016.
