Tasting Notes:

A dark, intense red colour. While red fruit dominates, the intense bouquet reveals scents of wild berries and blackcurrant, leading into fine woody hints. The attack on the palate is vinous and the harmonious structure offers plenty of body in the mouth. The mid-palate impression is one of outstanding fruit. The finish is remarkably long and fresh.

The present-day Cheval Blanc vineyards had vines at least as far back as the 18th century, as shown by Belleyme's map of the region dated 1764. Nearly a century later, the estate was acquired by the Fourcaud-Laussac family who owned it until 1998, when it was sold to Mr Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère. The vineyard is in a single block, and borders on the Pomerol appellation. An outstanding terroir and unusual proportions of Cabernet Franc and Merlot give this great wine an absolutely unique flavor. Château Cheval Blanc has had a greater number of outstanding vintages than any other classified great growth over the past century.

Flowering was delayed after an early bud break, taking place three days after the usual date. Mid-véraison (colour change) was observed on the 11th of August for Merlot and the 14th of that month for Cabernet Franc. This was also later than usual. The harvest lasted from the 24th of September to the 9th of October, which was also later than the 10-year average. A gap between phenological maturity and physiological maturity was the inevitable result of the cool temperatures in 2001.

2001 Cheval Blanc contains 1% press wine and was not chaptalised. Six percent of the wine was bled off fermentation vats. It was aged in 100% new oak barrels.
