Tasting Notes:

Deep red with bluish highlights on the rim, intensely coloured. Wine made with tempranillo grapes from a sole vineyard in the Rioja Alavesa, in the quest for character and personality. This wine offers us a great intensity of fruit where notes of blackberry, redcurrant, blueberries and hints of blue fruits such as sloe berries stand out. We find notes from the oak ageing such as pipe tobacco, cigar box, forest floor and a roasted finish that create an elegant and subtle whole.

At the foot of Laguardia, between the Sierra de Cantabria and the sinuous course of the Ebro, Bodegas Palacio keeps the dynamic spirit of its origins alive, that moment in 1894 when Cosme Palacio took charge of the family winery. Here the treasure is in the vines. Protected by the imposing rocks of the Sierra Cantabrian Mountains, the tempranillo and viura vines find their ideal conditions. High altitude, chalky-clay soils, south facing, a unique microclimate with Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. A great potential for finesse, nurtured with the utmost care.

Alcoholic fermentation: De-stemmed, crushed grapes. Long macerations of 28, 32 days in stainless steel tanks with the cap submerged, to extract all the primary fruit aromas of the varietal, as well as the maximum colour. Gentle pumping over to maximise the extraction of polyphenolic compounds. Malolactic fermentation: takes place in French oak barrels, adding hints of spices and a smoother, more appealing character.

Aged for 18 months in 225 litre new French oak barrels. New, lightly toasted, hand-cleft barrels are used, from different French cooperages. The wine remains in bottle for at least 28 months.
